For a few years I participated in National Novel Writing Month, or Nanowrimo, in which participants were invited to write a novel within 30 days, typing 1,667 words per day. Nanowrimo ended in March 2025, but in line with its ethos, I decided to take it in a different direction this month. The goal is for me to write 30 articles this month. Rather than trying to write 1,667 words per day, the articles can be of any length, but they must be published on my blog, “Freedman on the Go,” as well as Substack during the month of November.
This idea isn’t new to me. I’d already considered publishing 30 articles in a month as part of a greater initiative to prioritize my writing over other matters, job hunting excepted. The idea is simple: If I set a goal, I’d like to see it to completion. Nonetheless, I’m moving forward with smaller steps first. The larger goal outside of publishing my articles online is to also work on my fiction since I find the greatest inspiration in world-building and character creation. I’d be very happy if I could write one short story a week and send it out for publication in the larger literary market, science fiction and fantasy especially.
This article that you’re reading is the first article of that month. It is, quite simply, a pledge to myself to keep going as a writer and hopefully for you to follow my progress as a reader. The point of this exercise isn’t to be a perfectionist but rather to allow myself the grace to try new things as well as gradually grow my readership over time. If you wish to follow my progress, please stayed tuned to Substack as well as this website which will be undergoing a few changes this month as part of my plans to renovate and improve its performance. I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I do.
